Power games, market and a murderess
The marketplace - Bremen's "parlor" - is surrounded by historic buildings whose landlords have shaped the city's fortunes over the centuries. The location of the town hall and Roland, Bremen's most important man, was carefully chosen by Bremen's councilors back then. The councilors thus put the archbishop in his place. You can also find out what the pointed knees of Bremen's Roland are all about (this much we can reveal: it's about the trade in goods on the market square).
Of course, we'll also visit the Bremen town musicians, the city's world-renowned ambassadors who once made their way to the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. By the way, according to the fairy tale of the Brothers Grimm, the four animals never arrived in Bremen.
Many other legends and stories also play a role during the tour. Among other things, so you will learn about the cripple at Roland's feet.
A very strange street
Next, we head to Böttcherstrasse. Where once barrels made by craftsmen, later a street of brick was built, which itself can be called a work of art. Here you will learn, among other things, what the legend of the Seven Lazy Ones is all about and why a hen made of stone sits on a wall ledge with her little chicks. By the way, KABA, the famous cocoa powder, also comes from Bremen. What does it have to do with Böttcherstrasse? This secret will be revealed during the guided tour...
Medieval alleys and all kinds of curiosities
In Schnoor, you'll wander through the city's oldest quarter with its narrow alleys and lined-up tiny houses, where today artists and craftsmen, among others, display their wares. But how did people live here in earlier times? Who lived here? What was it about the so-called Balge? Who was Heini Holtenbeen and what did he always hide in his coat pocket? And why did people with long beaked masks walk around here in some years? You will get the answers to these and many other exciting questions during the tour.
This guided tour is suitable for grades 1-13 and can be customized according to the age of the pupils. By arrangement, certain topics can also be focused on, such as Bremen in the Middle Ages. During the tour, the students are involved interactively, for example by asking questions or playing small search games.
For grades 3 to 7, at the end of the tour, approximately for the last 20 minutes, the pupils are given a small entertaining quiz with questions and multiple-choice questions about the content of the city tour. The quiz is not intended to be a test, but rather a funny way to review what they have heard before.
